The guest quartet is led by vocalist/music educator/composer Semenya McCord. Joining Semenya are Greg Ward on sax, Dan Leahy on piano, Mike Nellas on bass and Chris Brooks on drums.
Semenya earned her degree in Music Education from Knox College. She has performed throughout New England since 1975, developing programs and residencies that feature spirituals, blues, traditional and contemporary jazz. From 1991 until 2003, she taught part-time at the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, teaching "The Art of Rock and Roll" and "Jazz". She also taught private voice students at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, the New England Conservatory's Preparatory and Continuing Education Division in Boston, and the Applied Music Program at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
McCord is currently teaching jazz voice at Carl Sandburg College and working on her Masters degree in the Jazz Studies Program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She is an active member of the International Association for Jazz Education, Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, and the Music Educators National Conference. This will be a terrific program with Semenya providing vocals, along with a great lineup of musicians.The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band, featuring outstanding jazz musicians from the area, will entertain you with a mixture of jazz styles. This talented and versatile group, led by Larry Harms, is the heart of our monthly jazz program for the jazz fans of Central Illinois. We are grateful to the House Band for their variety of live jazz offerings. Come out and support them - you'll enjoy it.
