117 N. Western Ave., PeoriaThe Illinois Central College (ICC) Jazz Band is the guest group for our March program. Dominic Spera, a jazz trumpeter and vocalist will appear with the Jazz Band. Dominic Spera is the artist-in-residence, through a program sponsored by the family of Ruth S. Holmes. Ruth Holmes served on the Board of ICC for many years and was a strong supporter of the arts. Dominic Spera is a retired professor emeritus from Indiana University, a former Broadway orchestra player, author of a popular improvisation method, and a prolific composer. He also is a veteran of bands led by Tommy Dorsey, Charlie Barnett, Andy Williams, Natalie Cole, and others.
Vocalists, Brianna Thomas and David Bollinger, will also perform with the band, in addition to traditional big band sounds. This outstanding jazz band is directed by Larry Harms. The band has participated in the Western Illinois University Band Festival, where they have won several honors. The band will be featured at the Rootabaga Jazz Fest, in Galesburg, on Saturday, March 15. Jazz fans of the area also know Larry as a great sax player and as the leader of the CIJS House Band. Larry has done a great job at ICC, and throughout Central Illinois, developing young jazz musicians. We are all grateful for everything that Larry does to promote jazz in the area.The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band, featuring outstanding jazz musicians from the area, will entertain you with a mixture of jazz styles. This talented and versatile group, led by Larry Harms, is the heart of our monthly jazz program for the jazz fans of Central Illinois. We are grateful to the House Band for their variety of live jazz offerings. Come out and support them - you'll enjoy it.
