The Central Illinois Jazz Society presents
WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra
6:00 - 9:30 p.m.
Sunday, April 21, 2002
Jumer's Castle Lodge (in the Mozart Room), Peoria
The Jazz Studio Orchestra (JSO) is the premier group of the Western Illinois University (WIU) jazz program. They have performed throughout Illinois and Iowa, in addition to frequent tours of Europe. They have released several CDs, which have received a Grammy nomination and four-star recognition from Downbeat magazine.
The JSO will provide many "big band" sounds, including those of Stan Kenton and works by contemporary big band writers. They have about 100 tunes in their repertoire and will select from those songs, based upon the chemistry of the Jazz Society crowd. The JSO recently competed at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. Corey Bell, tenor saxophonist, was recognized as the outstanding sax soloist of the festival. This is an outstanding college big band!
Dale Hopper has directed the Jazz Studio Orchestra for 23 years. This will be his last year with the JSO, since he will soon retire. Dale has had a distinguished teaching career, spanning 39 years. We look forward to welcoming Dale and the WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra back to the Jazz Society. Be sure to attend this terrific event. You will hear a lot of great jazz. In addition, you will learn a lot about jazz from Dale as he provides many insights with his discussions between songs.
The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band will perform during the middle set. The CIJS House Band features outstanding jazz musicians from the area. They will entertain you with a mixture of jazz styles. This talented group is the heart of our monthly jazz offerings for the jazz fans of Central Illinois. We are grateful to them for their variety of live jazz offerings. Come out and support them.
